'Understanding the Many International Varieties of Action Learning: Origins and Practices'
Action Learning in Africa
presented by Dr. Rose Pillay
Dr. Rose Pillay is based in South Africa, a member of IFAL’s Executive Committee since 2022, and founder of the consultancy Panacea Hedging:
www.panaceahedging.co.za
She is the author of Growing Through Reflection: A Journal for Action Learning Facilitators (2021), and The Leadership Theatre: Stories to Challenge, Inspire, and Heal (2024). Her articles have appeared in the journals Action Learning: Research and Practice (2022), and the African Journal of Business Management.
Rose has served as the Regional Leadership and Development Adviser for Africa, British High Commission, in Pretoria and worked throughout Africa with senior leadership teams (ambassadors and their direct reports). At Eskom, she was part of the Leadership Faculty, at the Eskom Academy of Learning, where she initiated and implemented Action Learning programs at South Africa’s national energy transmission company, and in the earlier part of her career held various positions in Finance there. In the private sector, at Old Mutual, Rose was Senior Leadership and Talent Development Consultant responsible for implementing the leadership and talent development framework for all leadership layers in the organisation.
This session will explore how Action Learning has been uniquely interpreted and applied across the African continent, with a particular focus on South Africa. Recognizing that cultural norms deeply influence the practice, we will examine specific African traditions and practices (Ubuntu, Harambee and Letsema) to highlight parallels with Action Learning principles. The session will take a conversational format, moderated by Yury Boshyk, creating an interactive space to share insights. The aim is to provide fresh perspectives on the adoption of Action Learning, offering participants valuable reflections on how it can be adapted and embedded in other cultural and organizational contexts.
The event will be recorded and made available to IFAL members in the Members Area of the IFAL website.
Join us online in Zoom for an interactive 60 minute experience, facilitated by the IFAL team.
