IFAL's Second Global Dialogue

Wednesday 9th December 2020 13:00 - 15:00 GMT 

IFAL's first global dialogue on the 21st of October brought together IFAL members from around the world and started a conversation about the issues faced around the world related to inequality, injustice, the misuse of power and privilege and the impact of human life on the planet's eco systems and natural resources. We invited members to connect to their beliefs and to notice where their energy takes them as they consider action to tackle these broad and interconnected issues.

Members acknowledged that power and privilege cannot be side stepped and also acknowledged that in some of the conversations related to power and privilege, participants may find exploration of the issues painful. We surfaced questions including;

How do we engage people who don’t engage?
How to empower individuals and influence the system? 
What collaboration with other organisations might be possible to look at learning in relation to power and privilege?

We wondered about the value of exploring some case studies/real problems where we use AL to explore and begin to understand how race and privilege works; we wondered about exploring the history and practice of AL and how it lends itself to this kind of exploration but also how we bring our own biases to the AL space; and we wondered about investigating the varied and numerous different kinds of AL used around the world and how they relate to power and privilege in the context of the issues of now.

There was rich dialogue about how action learning might help and how the qualities that are often seen in an action learning set; deep listening, compassion and curiosity, may serve future conversations.

We are keen to reconvene a further dialogue on the 9th of December.  This is a further IFAL members only event.  Please register your place in order to attend.
